Here are our top tips for keeping those planters lush and vibrant all season long.
THE SECRET TO HANGING BASKETS
We love a lush basket filled with trailing lobelia, upright geraniums, and cascading petunias. They are dense, colorful, and incredibly hungry for water and fertilizer! The secret to successful care for hanging plants is simple: water daily and thoroughly, and fertilize weekly.
Before they arrive on your porch, these planters are watered at least once a day at the garden center, and usually, they are fed with liquid fertilizer every day, too. That consistent feeding is what keeps the flowers blooming profusely.
MASTERING THE ROTATING PRUNE
The other key to a healthy basket is daily deadheading of spent flowers and leggy growth. If it feels scary to cut back those long, leggy bits (think of the long petunia stem with just one new bloom at the end), try our rotation method: cut back only one leggy stem per day.
Rotating your cuts keeps your plant pruned but avoids the bare, shocking look brought on by a hard cutback all around. New stems will grow from the cut point—especially if you try to make the cut at a node or joint and maintain your regular fertilizing schedule!
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANTERS FOR COASTAL SUN
If your yard gets baked in the coastal sun, hanging plants might require watering twice daily. If that is too much maintenance, we highly recommend sticking to pots and ground planters. While they still need frequent watering (daily or every other day if in the sun for more than 4 hours), using large pots and clay pots helps prevent the roots from baking.
When selecting your containers, try to avoid dark planters, as they absorb more sun and heat. Instead, opt for materials that breathe well:
- Cement planters and terra cotta provide great airflow and a classic coastal look.
- Wooden flower boxes or planting boxes are excellent options because they breathe and hold moisture well.
SHADE VS. SUN CARE
Even in our sunny coastal towns, many homes feature beautiful shaded porches. Shaded baskets, pots, and planters require the exact same care routine, but usually need less frequent watering. Ferns are the notable exception here—they do not like to be cut unless the frond is completely brown!
If you prefer lower-maintenance sun options that do not require regular deadheading, look for wonderful annuals like Portulaca, Snapdragons, and Lantana. (We still recommend cutting back leggy stems so new growth can sprout and bloom!)
